Instructor Training FAQs
How experienced do I need to be to start a CrossYoga training?
You will still benefit from our trainings, even if you have not practiced yoga for years! Doing a little yoga for some months before the training would be beneficial, as you will learn quicker if you are somewhat familiar with the poses. Many students start the training mainly to learn more about yoga for themselves, but end up wanting to teach CrossYoga. You don’t need to be a certain body type or in shape to do the training! In fact we LOVE that we all look different, as God created us all uniquely. If you have injuries that prevent you from doing all the poses: don’t worry. There will be students looking for someone to teach them exactly the way you are able to!
Can I start with the +100 hour Training (Module 2)?
You can only take Module 2 ( +100hr training) after Module 1 is completed. If you are doing the online training, you can start when you are almost done with Module 1.
I’m already a yoga instructor but I want to get certified in CrossYoga, how do I do that?
Our mini training is perfect for you! In this 12 hour training (currently online), you'll learn how to theme a class, to make it Christ-centered. Find out more here.
What if I don’t believe enough? What if I’m not sure I’m a Christian? Will this training still work for me?
The training is for everybody regardless of faith, race, identity or other things that can be used to differentiate us. You’ll learn to be a yoga instructor; this also means that you’ll be qualified* to teach in a “non-Christian studio.”
This training is based on Christian faith and we strive to make everything easy to understand and open to anybody!
Completing the 200 hour training will make you eligible to register as a yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance. This is completely optional, but some studios will require this certification to teach.
How do I know which training to choose? Module 1 (100 hours) or both Modules 1 and 2 (200 hours)?
The online Module 1 or the 100 hour in-person training are amazing trainings if you want to teach yoga once or twice a week in your church or community center, or maybe host a retreat once in a while. Teaching yoga is something you feel is meaningful, but it is not the way you plan to earn your main income.
When you add Module 2 (+100hr) online* or the 8 extra days in a face to face training, you will become a CrossYoga 200 RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher). This is great if you love diving deeper, or if you have a vision of making an income by teaching yoga, offering retreats, workshops, etc. With the 200RYT you get an internationally recognized training via Yoga Alliance. Yoga Alliance has requirements that must be followed in order for you to get the 200RYT certification, and therefore this training is more expensive and comprehensive.
How quickly can I receive both the 100 hour and 200 hour CrossYoga Training?
It is possible to take the CrossYoga 100 hour training and then continue with Module 2 - and become a 200RYT. 2 or 3 times a year we plan a face to face 100 hour training, and once a year the “adding 100 hour” training (Module 2). You are welcome to do Module 1 online and Module 200 face to face. If you choose to do both of the Modules online, the training is self-paced.
What are the expectations for the face to face teacher trainings?
Participation in all the modules and program items is mandatory on the face to face trainings. Should injuries prevent you, you may sit and listen and instruct while seated.
In addition to the modules, there will be required reading materials in English. The reading can be done before the training starts.
In the Danish training only: It is expected that you do yoga on your own at least once a week during your training. This can be through online instruction or in person. You will evaluate the yoga classes you attend on your own by keeping a journal of your observations that you will share with a CrossYoga teacher.
What are the required readings for the 100 hour - Module 1 training?
The book of John in the Bible (choose a version of the Bible that you are not used to reading)
The CrossYoga Manual
What are the required readings for the 200 hour - Module 2 training?
The CrossYoga Manual
The Yoga Sutras as translated by Swami Vivikanakda (pdf). You only need to read the actual sutras, so the comments on them are an optional reading material. The PDF file will be sent to you so you don't have to buy it.
The Anatomy of the Soul (By Curt Thompson)*
Besides reading, you should have taught at least 6 classes before attending Module 2. If this is not an option, we ask that you record 6 classes on your phone and review them.
*Not included, must be purchased separately.
What can I expect from the in person training?
Expect the training to be intense and educational. You will be challenged, encouraged and equipped. You will experience a unique and deep community with the other instructors.
There will also be time during the training for your own meditation so you are not moving all the time.
What happens after I complete my training?
You are now part of the CrossYoga community and will have continued support from us as you navigate your personal next steps into the yoga world. The training you receive will give you experience and skills to lead meditations. You can choose whether you want to teach CrossYoga or ordinary “yoga” after the training.
You don’t need to use the name “CrossYoga” for your classes, but we would love it if you did! If you name your yoga classes something else, we would appreciate if you would mention that you are a trained CrossYoga instructor and maybe use the logo. This way you help CrossYoga reach further out with God’s love!
Will I be certified as a Yoga Alliance Instructor?
Those who complete the 100 hour training (Module 1) will receive a CrossYoga certificate - and not be certified as a Yoga Alliance Instructor. Only those who complete the 200-hr program will become a CrossYoga RYT with Yoga Alliance. Our 200 hour training is a registered Yoga Alliance School and is therefore a more extensive training compared to our basic 100 hour Module 1 course.
I want to become a CrossYoga instructor, but I can’t afford the full price?
We invite you to apply for a grant if you are a student or otherwise financially distressed. You can apply for a grant for the 100 or 200 hour trainings to receive up to 60% off. We will, in exchange, have you help with some practical tasks during the course or help spreading the word about CrossYoga if you do a training online. Fill out the application here.
Refund policy
There is norefund after your online purchase.
With in-person trainings: No refund 2 weeks before the training starts. If you need to cancel the training before this time, you will be refunded what you paid minus a deposit of €200.
What is CrossYoga and CrossYoga Academy?
“CrossYoga” is a not-for-profit network of trained instructors. We meet on- and off-line to support each other, pray together and share life. “CrossYoga Academy” is a business owned by Rie Frilund Skårhøj, who is also the lead trainer on the 200 hour trainings. In the future there might be multiple CrossYoga schools offering trainings - all with the same faith and culturally adjusted curriculum.
